Amnesia - Is it possible for lost memories to return as a separate personality?

By that I mean, is it possible that somebody whom has lost all or some of their memories can have those memories return but as a completely separate personality? In terms of Dissociative identity disorder AKA Multiple personality disorder AKA split personalities.

Thanks!Amnesia - Is it possible for lost memories to return as a separate personality?
That is the theory behind DID. They go through severe trauma as a child, physical and sexual abuse (to the level of torture). The trauma is too terrible for one person to remember, so each personality has a few memories. The personalities are usually the same age as when the events happened. I don't know that there is a theory as to why some of the personalities are different genders. They do find there are physiological differences. For example, one personality might be highly allergic to strawberries and another has no problem with them.

The idea is that it is a protective mechanism and may not really be a mental illness in the traditional sense, but a way for the person to protect themselves from something so horrible. Most people with multiple personalities are gifted.
