How can you tell if you have amnesia?

For example if I dont remember everything I written here does that mean I have amnesia or is it something like you forgot a whole year of your life and forgot your name.How can you tell if you have amnesia?
You should talk to your doctor because you might have Alzheimers. Have you been in an accident, or has it always been like this?
