How does drug-induced amnesia work?

I've been looking up details and it seems it's mostly present in pre-surgical anaesthetics, but is quite unlike retrograde amnesia. Could someone fill me in on just how much of an effect drugs can have on one's memory? How does drug-induced amnesia work?
alot of effect... i had an upper endoscopy last year.. since im hard to sedate, the doctor said he was giving me a hypnotic that causes temporary amnesia...and it sure worked.. rather creepy.. one minute i was in the examining room with hospital robes on and an hour and a half later i was fully dressed in another room, in the middle of a conversation with a nurse. I kinda looked around like what the ?? its over?? the creepy part is they said i was awake the whole time but i have absolutely no recollection of the procedure at all..
